The Christian Conduct of Corinthians

As we continue reading through the second letter from the Apostle Paul to the Corinthians, there is some context that we need to be aware of.

It is gleaned from Paul’s words that there were those in Corinth who were raising questions over Paul’s apostleship from the Lord and were attempting to undermine his authority.

Read today’s passage to see how he responds:

Read 2 Corinthians 10:7-12.

Paul was receiving opposition from the Corinthians who were questioning his authority and apostleship from the Lord.

As absurd as that is to consider the Apostle Paul of all people being critiqued and opposed by a Church, don’t we often do the same today to those God has put over us?

For consider, have you ever witnessed a Pastor or leader be scrutinized and opposed by their congregation?

This sadly isn’t as uncommon as you’d hope it would be, but after all, where there are messy people, there tend to be messes.

But no matter the cause, whether gossip, resentment, or simply a rebellious spirit that fuels these internal problems within a Church, there is an important thing that we must remember as Paul points out to us here:

“For even if I boast a little too much of our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be ashamed.”
-2 Corinthians 10:8

A Pastor is given his authority by the Lord for your sake; not for himself, but for you.

He is a servant of the whole congregation who lives and works so you all may be blessed and raised to maturity.

Therefore, whether you’ve ever been guilty of this or not, take a few minutes to reflect on these things, on your Pastors and leaders, and how the Lord has given them authority for your benefit.

Should you consider treating them a bit differently than you already do? And in what way can you honor and respect them as your overseer?

This may be complicated, but doesn’t need to be, and really shouldn’t be.

So, if you ever find yourself desiring to oppose or side against your Pastor or leaders within the Church, remember this and who was the one who gave them that authority in the first place!

Christian

Since coming to faith as a young college student, God’s lead has taken me around the world and back. Today, my passion is clearer than ever; my heart hurts for the lost, but it burns for the Church. My deepest desire is to equip the Church to be the body, working together to see people’s lives be redeemed in the name of Jesus. My name is Christian and my wife, Emily and I have been married for 6 years and have a little one named Amelia. Together, we’re fully committed to following Jesus to where ever He leads us.
