The Christian Conduct of Corinthians

The early Church believed without a doubt that Jesus was going to come back for them during their lifetime.

They were correct on the fact that Jesus was coming back for His Church, but thankfully for us they were just altogether too eager and hopeful that it would be for them back then, for we are in fact still waiting for Jesus’ return and are seeing the signs of His coming more than ever before.

And for that reason, in light of their eagerness as well as our own, today’s reading is wisdom from the Apostle Paul that may spark some controversy or may even excite you. Continue to see what message he had to share with the early Corinthian Church that is all the more relevant to us today than it was for them.

Read 1 Corinthians 7:25-40.

If we stripped down Paul’s words of this passage to their most basic conviction, it would simply be:

Be aware of the times, of Jesus’ imminent return, and live your life accordingly.

Ask these questions and seek the Lord’s wisdom; should you marry? Should you buy a house? In what way are you called to live so to be ready and prepared for the days ahead?

The uncertainties of today’s world are insurmountable, but one thing is sure, Jesus is coming, and your destiny and purpose is to live for Him and be ready for that great and glorious day that we meet Him in the sky.

Take a few minutes in prayer and seek the Lord, ask the Spirit to lead you in these things, reflect on them all and what the Lord is leading you to, and then follow Him.

Reflection Questions:

The examples Paul gave are simply examples of many things we ought to take seriously concerning the times, and these things will look differently for each believer:

In what ways has the Spirit convicted you concerning how you are to be preparing and readying yourself for the future ahead?

How can you begin walking in obedience today and start applying these convictions to your life? Explain.

Christian

Since coming to faith as a young college student, God’s lead has taken me around the world and back. Today, my passion is clearer than ever; my heart hurts for the lost, but it burns for the Church. My deepest desire is to equip the Church to be the body, working together to see people’s lives be redeemed in the name of Jesus. My name is Christian and my wife, Emily and I have been married for 6 years and have a little one named Amelia. Together, we’re fully committed to following Jesus to where ever He leads us.
