A Heart Problem

When an archer draws his bow, aims at his target, and lets the arrow fly, he is hoping to hit the target, right?

But what about when he misses?

There is a word for that.

Sin.

Yes, sin is the word we use when we are designed to perfectly follow God’s standard of righteousness, but miss the mark, whether deliberately or not.

When we ought to be walking side by side with Him as He designed us to, we in our fallen nature repeatedly choose to live our way and fall short of His glory.

And that is the problem.

When God created man, He created him in His image, in His likeness, so to walk like and represent Him to the rest of creation, just as it is recorded:

“Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.””
-Genesis 1:26

You were designed for so much more, and yet, you are plagued with iniquity, a desire in your heart to do wrong.

No matter how much you desire to follow God and look like him, you can not seem to quite hit the target.

This is sin in its simplest form.

This is the problem we have inherited from Adam and Eve when they first decided to disobey God’s one rule to not eat of the fruit of good and evil.

And this is why our world is as broken and fallen as it is, it cannot hit the mark that it was designed to, therefore plummets further and further into darkness.

And the burning question we all need to know is, what is the cost of missing the mark?

Let’s find out.

Reflection Questions:

Are you able to recognize in your own life how you miss the mark?

Do you ever aim for perfection but seem to not quite make it in some way?

How do you recognize yourself as carrying the weight of an image-bearer of God?

Christian

Since coming to faith as a young college student, God’s lead has taken me around the world and back. Today, my passion is clearer than ever; my heart hurts for the lost, but it burns for the Church. My deepest desire is to equip the Church to be the body, working together to see people’s lives be redeemed in the name of Jesus. My name is Christian and my wife, Emily and I have been married for 6 years and have a little one named Amelia. Together, we’re fully committed to following Jesus to where ever He leads us.
